A major air and ocean search for a man who went overboard off the coast of Weipa has been called off after three days.

The 27-year-old Japanese nation disappeared from a fishing boat near Evans Landing early last Wednesday morning, with a mayday call received at about 4.20am.

Rescue planes, helicopters and boats had been searching for the man in the waters off Weipa.

Police continued with the search southwest of the town until Friday before declaring the window for survival of the man had closed.

The missing man was reportedly wearing an orange hi-vis shirt and thongs when he disappeared.

If you have information for police about this, or any other, incident, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersqld.com.au.
