Thank goodness these communities have access to services and in particular essential services like medical supplies, fresh produce and access to leave the area in the case that they need medical assistance (hopefully not). Take care everyone.

Bridge. For the price of a ferry you can build an amazing bridge upstream and do away with this awful system forever.

Fabian Mark

Even if a bridge was built it's gonna flood anyway, the road was closed before the ferry from flood waters, force of nature.

Den Brincat

Daintree residents don't want a bridge.

Rob Jovic

Time for realistic options for the area!!! Take the decision process away from these green radicals, and make way for decent access to the area, allow investment in the Daintree rather than decades of poverty caused by these so-called green lunatics who have been a scourge to the area, for selfish reasons not for conservation but for profit, such as things like Save the Daintree, Save the Reef, Save Save Save Save the Residents from these lunatics.

Jancy-Leigh Marrinon

Rob Jovic that's a bit harsh! We had a vote a couple of years ago, the COMMUNITY voted against building a bridge - not just the lunatic greenies. Do you have a viable alternative? Genuine question.

Steve Doble

Sorry Jancy, but that referendum was another example of Douglas Shire Council incompetence. DSC needs to apologise for offering “two ferries” as an option in that referendum as DSC had zero right to offer something that the State Government would never approve - doubling the damage to the Daintree River State Marine Park that ferry operations cause. A new DSC referendum is now due offering the only options available being another short term, unviable, unreliable, environmentally damaging single ferry or the sensibility of a permanent bridge and finally look after Daintree residents and businesses.

Neil Jabs

When will someone with vision, foresight, practicality, common sense and impartiality step up and commence planing for a Bridge NOW. The green selfish activists only want their own ideology and rhetoric and they don’t care about cheaper rates for ALL DSC residents, high maintenance costs running an inadequate, inferior now outdated ferry in a river that floods often. If they built a BRIDGE with 2m approaches on both sides and paid for by Federal and State governments would be the solution for everybody. No! - development across the river will not expand to ridiculous levels as council are in control of ALL building over there. This ferry and the new one on order with middlemen involved will lead to higher costs and downtime like we are having right now.

Pete Mills

Ferry is a waste of taxpayers money, always waiting, paying for ferry is a joke.

More stops needed

Council has organised SR Coaches to transport people from the Ferry to Mossman and Port Douglas.

Their timetable only shows one stop and pick up point at Mossman at Town and Country Complex near Woolworths.

I have asked both Council and SR Coaches to consider a stop at Raintrees which has Public Toilets (very necessary for some of us older people), easy access to the Hardware, Centrelink, Courthouse, Post Office and Coffee Shops etc.

They seem VERY reluctant to consider changing their schedule to allow for this extra stop even though it just makes sense.

Can you help persuade them to at least consider it?

Instead of cracking down on behaviour they're cracking down on inanimate objects. If someone was acting crazy with a fork they wouldn't crack down on forks they would arrest the crazy person.

Make sure you know the difference between an e-bike and an e-motto and for who is which one.

Ilya BJ

E-devices should absolutely go over 25kmh and a government shouldn’t have the power to tell you that you can’t, if they have issues with e-scooters going over 25, they can bring insurance and registration system so that the rider can legally go above 25kmh if not then i don’t blame anyone riding over 25kmh.

Geoff Field

The genie is out of the bottle. If there are changes to laws, enforcement will be interesting. BTW any nurse or doctor will tell you they are a public-health nightmare.

Promenade Strolls

Weird how the cops never fine the e-bike/scooter riders that can't afford shoes or a helmet but ride multi thousand-dollar scooters. Probably just coincidence.

John Fergusson

We used to send 16 year old kids to war, now they can't even ride an e-bike without the government being involved. It's a complete overreach.

Jack Mienhoff

Pedestrian safety what a joke. How about all the Muppets who take the whole path up walking the dog on the phone not looking up and in the left lane while walking towards you, headphones on can't here you ring ya bell and they step out in front pedestrians are half the problem.. So e-bikes are a problem not cyclists doing 40 to 50 kph on bike paths. Will agree that under 16 should not be on them. I ride an esk8 board courteous around people slow rite down as little kids are on path as well as dogs.

A tycoon to keep an eye on

Regarding Shaun Hollis's article entitled 'Who is the tycoon behind the latest Port Douglas development?', I paid the "Beach Front Estate" project on Langley a visit.

This tycoon's first foray into Port Douglas development left me wholly uninspired. I was reminded of his company's disgraceful handling of the Melaleuca trees at that site which saw the displacement of flying foxes and many dead ones falling onto the road during the destruction of the trees. If you can call cutting down a bunch of trees, dividing the land into plots for sale, and putting up two signs "development", sure.

Unsurprisingly, so many of the plots of land on the much hyped "Beach Front Estate" remain empty with forlorn "For Sale" signs dotting the area, and grass in need of mowing.

I hope the Shire Council keeps a close eye on said tycoon's plans and proposals. But, it's safe to say, he ain't no John Morris.
